Software Freedom Day, September 18th

LUGOD will once again be participating in the global Software Freedom Day, Saturday, September 18th. We'll be at the Davis Food Co-Op from 4pm-7pm, demonstrating Linux and other open source software, and handing out free software discs and informational pamphlets. "Android" roundtable at next month's social gathering

A number of LUGOD members will be bringing their Android-based phones (and perhaps other devices) to next month's social gathering (at Crepeville in downtown Davis) for a roundtable discussion and show-and-tell. If you've got an Android device you'd like to show off, and/or are interested in learning more about the platform and some of the devices available, please join us! (We hope to also have an Android development talk at one of our regular meetings at some point, too!)

Speaker and topic change for tonight's meeting

Our originally-scheduled speaker, Owen Delong of Hurricane Electric, is under the weather and can't make it to Davis to speak tonight. In lieu of the "IPv6" talk that was scheduled, Brian Lavender has offered to do a talk on "Using Genetic Algorithms to do Network Intrusion Detection." Tonight at 7pm at Explorit Science Center on 5th Street.

Minutes, slides and photos, plus constitution changes, from February's meeting

The minutes from last week's LUGOD meeting are now available. It included a lengthy discussion and votes on three motions to alter our constitution to include some that the California Franchise Tax Board suggests for 501(c)7 groups (though in no way affects the group's purpose). Members of LUGOD will be on two radio shows this week, to talk about Linux and open source, the club, and our 11th anniversary meeting next Monday. On Wednesday, some time between 5 and 6pm, Bill Kendrick will be on Dr. Andy's Poetry & Technology Hour on KDVS (90.3FM in Davis). And on Friday, some time between 10 and 11am, Bill Kendrick and Margo Schulter will be on Insight on Capital Public Radio's KXJZ (90.9FM in Sacramento).

Kicking off 2010!

LUGOD had a great social gathering at Crepeville restaurant this evening, with over a dozen different people showing up over the span of 2 and a half hours (and 1/4th of them were newcomers). Our next event will be our 11th anniversary meeting at the Veterans' Memorial Center. Join us for free food, give-aways, raffle prizes, and a presentation from LifeRay, Inc.!

All nominees ran unopposed, so at last night's meeting we called for any objections to the nominees being elected as officers. There were no objections, so officers take their positions immediately: root: Bill Kendrick, sys: Brian Lavender, typescript: Andrew Roach, /dev/null: Greg FitzGerald.

LUGOD is holding a social gathering tomorrow evening (November 3rd, 7pm) at Crepeville. At month's general meeting (Monday, November 16th), REvolution Computing will be here to tell us about the R statistical programming language, and their optimized R product, "REvolution R". Opportunity to advertise on Unitrans

LUGOD can place 15"x11" ads on all ~40 Unitrans single-decker busses (between Sept. and June) for $455. We got quotes from FedEx Office and Copyland in Davis, and the latter can produce them (color copies on card stock, trimmed, and laminated) for less than $100. We have less than a week to respond to Unitrans.
