LUGOD's 2012 calendard is filling up!
Posted 2012-04-10 17:15:00
We've booked guest presenters for meetings [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/] through September (so far)! Of course, that doesn't mean we're not always looking for speakers [http://www.lugod.org/speak/]. Want to talk? Have a topic idea? Know someone we should invite? Once again, drop Bill Kendrick a note via email: firstname.lastname@example.org [mailto:email@example.com].
Web-based IRC lets you talk to LUGOD members in your browser

Thanks to the Davis Food Co-Op [http://www.davisfood.coop] for inviting us to be part of their "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise" series of events this month, and to Tim Riley, Brian Lavender, Sing, and Alex Mandel who joined me (Bill Kendrick) and my son in putting together today's demo, and answering questions. We had a great turnout, lots of interest in Monday's anniversary meeting [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/], and at least one new Tux Paint fan.

If you, or someone you know, would like to speak, or you have a topic or speaker you'd like to suggest, please contact Bill Kendrick at firstname.lastname@example.org [mailto:email@example.com].

Venues needed for November and January meetings
Posted 2011-10-26 10:40:00
The public library will be closed on the days we're holding our November (21st) and January (16th) meetings [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/], and their security system is still not configured to allow after-hours access. If you can provide space for either or both meetings, please email Bill Kendrick [mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org]. (Note: Our January meeting will be our 13th birthday, so we're looking for somewhere with capacity for 40-80 people, and that allows food.) Thanks in advance!

Thanks to Charles Shattuck for doing a short talk on "MyForth" and Brian Lavender for a short talk on "Hibernate," filling in for our guest speaker who was stuck in Southern California due to the big storm. John from LFS has offered to reschedule the "Full Scale Flight Simulator" talk for later this year. Sorry to those who were disappointed by the last-minute cancellation!
No flight simulator talk tonight
Posted 2011-03-21 17:50:00
Our guest speakers were stormed in, so as warned on 'vox' and 'vox-announce' mailing lists, we aren't having the flight simulator talk tonight... but join us for an impromtu Plan B. 7pm at the library!
Social gathering next Tuesday, "Full Scale Flight Simulators" on March 21st
Posted 2011-02-25 10:20:00
A rare aligning of the calendars has caused our next social gathering (Tuesday, March 1st [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/]) to occur only one week after our last meeting (this week's "IPv6" talk). See you at Crepeville [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/crepeville/]!
Then, after a 3-week break, we'll be welcoming John Wojnaroski, Chief Engineer at LFS Technologies, who will be talking about full-scale flight simulation under Linux (Monday, March 21st) [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/#2011.03.21]. This will be our first meeting back at the public library [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/library/on.php] since it reopened on East 14th Street!

Posted 2011-02-22 10:00:00
Since there were no nominations made, and no objections to keeping the current officers [http://www.lugod.org/members/officers/] at last night's meeting, elections will not be held until the regularly-scheduled ones on October.
Elections survey non-conclusive
Posted 2011-02-15 11:40:00
Only two people responded regarding whether LUGOD should hold elections now [http://www.lugod.org/mailinglists/archives/vox-announce/msg00760.html] (since we forgot to last October!), or wait until this October.
So we'll hold them if anyone wishes to run against the current officers, otherwise we'll just stick with the current ones [http://www.lugod.org/members/officers/]. If you'd like to nominate yourself, or someone else, please email typescript [mailto:email@example.com] by February 20th (the day before our next meeting [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/]).

LUGOD changes announced / Elections Survey
Posted 2011-02-04 10:10:00
Per our officer's meeting this week [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/past/2011.02.01.php], LUGOD will soon be ending our LERT (Linux Emergency Relief Team) [http://www.lugod.org/lert/] service (please use our 'vox-tech' mailing list [http://www.lugod.org/mailinglists/#vox-tech], Installfest workshops [http://www.lugod.org/if/] and/or IRC chat channel [http://www.lugod.org/irc/]), our 'vox-outreach' mailing list [http://www.lugod.org/mailinglists/#vox-outreach] (use 'vox' [http://www.lugod.org/mailinglists/#vox] for event coordination), and our old CafePress.com shop [http://www.lugod.org/shop/].
Additionally, we forgot to hold elections for club officers [http://www.lugod.org/members/officers/] in October! We'll be holding an informal survey on 'vox' [http://www.lugod.org/mailinglists/#vox] to find out whether we should hold elections immediately, or just wait until this October.

One down, one to go: January 2011 meetings
Posted 2011-01-12 11:20:00
We had a relatively small, but lively crowd show up for our short-notice bonus meeting last night, to learn about Linux on satellites and CubeSat, and to digress into a conversation on artificial intelligence. (Photos [http://www.lugod.org/photos/2011.01.11/], minutes [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/past/2011.01.01.php].)
[http://www.lugod.org/meeting/] This coming Monday, we'll be celebrating our 12th anniversary (how we formed [http://www.lugod.org/documents/history/beginning.txt]) with free pizza, cake, drinks, and some books to give away (thanks, O'Reilly Media [http://www.oreilly.com/]!).
Mark Terranova, from the Bay Area non-profit The Gidget Kitchen [http://www.gidgetkitchen.org/], will be there to talk about how Free and Open Source communities compare to cults (seriously!). As always, our meeting is free and open to the public. Learn more. [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/]
Bonus meeting this month: "LINUX IN SPAAAAAACE!"
Posted 2011-01-04 15:25:00
Along with tonight's social gathering [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/] at Crepeville [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/crepeville/], and this month's regular meeting (and our 12th anniversary) on the 17th [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/#2011.01.17] (which is now entitled "If Tux the Penguin offered you Kool-Aid, would you drink it?"), we're also having a bonus meeting this month, next Tuesday the 11th [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/#2011.01.11], all about putting Linux on satellites. (The presentation-meetings will be at Explorit Nature Center [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/explorit/on.php].)
Posted 2010-12-18 16:15:00
Apparently, The Enterprise says that this Monday's meeting requires RSVP, but that's not true! However, it sounds like this will be a popular meeting, and space is limited, so it might become standing-room only! Update: It turns out to have been confusion thanks to word-wrap.
December's LUGOD will be in 3-D!
Posted 2010-12-06 16:30:00
Our previously-scheduled talk, "WidgetFX," has moved to December of next year. Instead, this month [http://www.lugod.org/meeting/upcoming/#2010.12.20] we'll have Oliver Kreylos of UC Davis KeckCAVES [http://www.keckcaves.org] who will demonstrate how one can commodity devices like the Xbox Kinect, Nintendo Wiimote and PlayStation Move to create and interact in 3D virtual environments. (You might have seen some of his videos [http://www.youtube.com/user/okreylos].)
