LUGOD AT THE SOCIETY FOR TECHNICAL COMMUNICATORS CONFERENCE

What Is It?

LUGOD and other local LUGs were invited to exhibit at the Society for Technical Communicators Region 8 Conference, which was to be held at UC Davis from July 25th through July 26th.

In 2003, we attended the "Writers in the Workplace", a small one-day event held by the Sacramento chapter of STC at American River College. Photos are available. (Note: That event was much smaller than the region 8 conference would have been!)

The Society for Technical Communication is a professional association (with 153 chapters and over 20,000 members worldwide) for those in the field of technical communication. Region 8 of STC includes 21 chapters with more than 3,500 members in California, Nevada, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand.

Our Purpose:

Our purpose at this event would have been:

  • To talk to people about Linux, OpenOffice.org, Mozilla, LaTeX and other Open Source, and get the word out about the local Linux user community and user groups

  • To hand out pamphlets containing information about LUGOD, Linux and Open Source

  • To hand out CDs containing useful software
July 5 - A CDROM ISO image has been created, containing Open Source software for Windows that's useful to technical writers. PLEASE BURN COPIES!

  • Do a presentation on Open Source
Update July 8 - Christian Einfeldt, an attorney in private practice in San Francisco, and part of the OpenOffice.org marketting team, has offered to do a presentation on Open Source (e.g., cost savings from using it) and/or OpenOffice.org at the STC conference on Sunday at 2:30pm. Mr. Einfeldt is also the producer of a documentary film called "The Digital Tipping Point", which takes the audience on a world tour to show the cultural implications of the global shift to open source software!
"All this for a song": Christian Einfeldt will explain the wide variety of applications available with a typical commercially available open source desktop package such as SuSE Professional 9.1. He will also offer some general tips for migrating to open source software based on his personal experience in migrating his law practice, and from his experience in traveling internationally for the filming of the documentary movie, the Digital Tipping Point.
