2009.12.21 MEETING NOTES

Location

Explorit

Project Reports

  • Installfests — No report.
  • LERT — No report.
  • Library — Bill scheduled a meeting to grab the Lending Library books from Henry, to disperse to CSU Bakersfield and Solona County College, and bring the remainder to the January LUGOD anniversary meeting, but was unable to. Nick Schmalenberger pointed out that he lives near Henry's office (where the books are located), and has a truck, so could try to arrange to get them.

Other Business

  • News — No news.
  • Financial Report — $13.00 in voluntary dues were collected. We currently have $703.21 in the bank (as well as $200 that's being held by the City of Davis as a deposit for renting a room at the Veteran's Memorial Center for our anniversary meeting in January).
  • Becoming a UC Davis "Campus Affiliate Group" — No report.
  • Explorit membership — Explorit has asked if LUGOD would like to donate to the science center (and become a member). Greg FiztGerald said he'd like to look into this again after our anniversary meeting in January, to see what our budget is.
  • Spending caps and allowances — Greg FitzGerald suggested we consider setting spending caps so that club officers can't spend more than, e.g., $50 of the club's money without holding a vote. Everyone in attendance at tonight's meeting decided it was not worth it. Bill Kendrick pointed out that (1) a level of trust is already there based on voting for the elected officers in the first place, and (2) having to hold a vote prior to spending more than $50 would delay things like the deposit needed for renting the Veteran's Memorial Center, for example.

Presentation

  • Don Werve discussed JRuby, an implementation of the Ruby programming language that runs on the Java JVM.
