2005.01.04 Meeting Notes

News

  • Oracle is taking over PeopleSoft.
  • Bookpool.com is running a 40% off sale on O'Reilly books.
  • LUGOD is looking for speakers in February. If you have ideas, email them to 'vox'.

Project Reports

  • Demo - No demos scheduled.

  • Installfests - The last Installfest was December 19th. Noone who was there was at the meeting, and we assume nothing exploded. The next IF will be on Saturday, January 22nd at UC Davis. Before we were told that we couldn't have network access, but we might be able to get network access. (Talked to Ken Gribble). The ports are only active during certain time periods. Wireless uplink kept losing its link. You need to be able to respond to ICMP ping to keep that from happening. (The best way is to get the wire working though.) UC Davis has a 5 megabytes/sec link to the UC Berkeley Debian mirror!!!

  • LERT - No report.

  • Library - We received two copies of "Knoppix Hacks" (written by our speaker, Kyle Rankin). One goes to LUGOD's Lending Library, the other was raffled away.

Other Business

  • Officer Elections - Ken Bloom was nominated for Secretary ('typescript'). Since there were no objections, Ken has taken this position.

  • Davis Library - The Yolo County Library system has been on furlough (closed, staff unpaid). Due to budget constraints, it costs $10/hr to rent the Blanchard room (where LUGOD meets). A number of people have donated to us, allowing us to continue to meet there through 2005.

  • Raffle - Wilson Shealy won a copy of "Knoppix Hacks."

  • Financial Report - $21.75 in voluntary dues were collected.

Presentation

  • Kyle Rankin, author of O'Reilly & Assoc.'s new book Knoppix Hacks presented about Knoppix, the popular "live CD" distribution of Linux.
