2005.06.20 Meeting Notes

News

  • August 14th is Picnix in Sunnyvale! Need volunteers and visitors to RSVP! (www.linuxpicnic.org) Still need $250 in donations, but already have a large list of sponsors covering $1750 of it. There is a logo contest and submissions are due in around 5 days. Winner's logo will be on all the t-shirts and flyers and so forth.

Project Reports

  • Demo - A demo took place at the Davis Food Co-Op on Sunday, June 12th. High level of interest from visitors. Lots of Ubuntu giveaways! Ryan is contacting farmers market to setup the next demo, and we should expect to hear from him on vox-officers.

  • Installfests - An Installfest took place yesterday. No report.

  • LERT - No news. Send email to lert@lugod.org if you need emergency Linux help.

  • Library - No news. Send email to librarian@lugod.org if you'd like to borrow any books. (See www.lugod.org/library )

Other Business

  • 100 Schools, 100 Days - Steve Hargadon, local proponent of thing clients (and once a LUGOD speaker) is looking to set up an installation day at a local school. This could be a good opportunity for Lugod and Roselug to work together on a project. May be coordinate to to fall on Software Freedom day in September. Details coming!

  • LUGOD on "Chew On This" - Public Commonwealth Project is planning a Public Access TV series, and wants to do a segment about computers and open source and would like LUGOD's input and help. See 'vox-outreach' mailing list for more.
  • Reducing Meeting Schedule - Officers are discussing cutting meetings down to 1 time per month. LUGOD volunteerism is also dwindling. Some comments were: we seem to be having less big names/cool hardware-type demos. Less meeting times gives us more flexibility with scheduling when we do get a big name. Linux may just be less exciting to people than it was a few years ago. Once a month will give the officers a better chance to promote. Perhaps less people are unemployed and thus less have free time for this sort of thing.

We will put up a vote online to change the bylaws. Johnathan will post with more details and the exact wording of the proposed change. If the motion is passed, then we will begin scheduling 1 speaker/month in August.

  • Financial Report - $12.97 in voluntary dues were collected.

Presentation

  • Henry House discussed Ruby on Rails, an application framework for the Ruby programming language.
