2004.02.03 Meeting Notes

News

  • SVLUG meets in San Jose tomorrow. Topic: Cluster Computing Data Management.
  • Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs meets in anta Clara on Thursday. "Open Source Business Models for Success," with Larry Augustin (VA), Marten Mickos (MySQL), Larry Rosen (OSI) and more. $35 for LUGOD members. ($10 more at the door)

Project Reports

  • Demo - Bill Kendrick and Mike Simons held the first Linux Demo in nearly a year, at the Davis Food Co-Op. We used a Windows XP laptop with Knoppix 3.3. We were even able to demonstrate running some basic Windows applications using WINE.

The new demo machine we bought in January now has Debian Testing on it. Mike is planning on installing the new 2.6.1 version of the Linux Kernel. We've had some trouble getting the DVI video card working; Bill suggested replacing our current LCD monitor with one that supports VGA.

  • Installfests - Jonathan Stickel reported a successful Installfest - our first Saturday IF. All 6 people who RSVP'd came, and one walk-in arrived. Plenty of volunteers came to help. 4 new Linux installs were performed, and the rest received help with existing Linux systems.

  • LERT - No news. We're considering creating a web-based form for LERT, similar to the RSVP form used for Installfests. (It could be useful for someone who has a LERT emergency to get their email working!)

  • Library - We received a copy of Xandros Desktop Deluxe Full Kit from Xandros.

Other Business

  • Open Source presentation for City of Davis - Some LUGOD members have shown interest in talking with the City of Davis about using Open Source software. Bill Kendrick has heard they currently use Novell and Microsoft softtware. (Novell is getting more involved with Linux, so perhaps they'll need to switch regardless!) Henry House and Ryan Castellucci are interested in putting something together, if we have the opportunity.

  • Open Source presentation for Sac. State MISA - Sacramento State's Management Information Systems Association asked if LUGOD would be willing to do a talk on Open Source at an upcoming meeting. Edward Elliott has offered to do a talk at their March 10th meeting. (He put a presentation together last year on "the business and IT value for open source" for the success team and transition group he works with. He may also be able to get help from SuSE and/or MySQL.)

  • Financial Report - $25.00 in voluntary dues were collected.

Presentation

  • Doug Barbieri demonstrated using Linux to download digital video from a DV camera, edit it, and prepare and burn it to DVD.
