I tried out Ubuntu on an older system over the weekend, and I was rather disappointed. The install seemed to go OK, but after rebooting it never got past Grub. I tried booting the live CD to see if I could fix grub manually, and that failed with a kernel panic IIRC. In the end I installed Fedora instead.

Yet another Debian based distribution has failed to impress me.

That surprises me. I've installed Ubuntu on 8 different
machines (some old, some new including 2 notebooks) in the
past month or so, and all went flawlessly.

OK, maybe I was just unlucky. I know the machine I was working with has a temperamental cdrom drive, so perhaps that led to the problems. Maybe I'll see it go better at an installfest.
