[vox] Please participate in a Georgetown graduate student's Masterthesis about code and behavoir

Hello. My name is Chaeny Emanavin. I am a graduate student in Georgetown University's Communication, Culture and Technology program current conducting reserach for my Masters project. I have contacted LUGOD member Bill Kendrick about contacting the LUGOD list about getting participation in a survey I have going for my research project. My reserch is comparing at how privacy and security software applications are used by different user groups on the Internet.

My work is based on the theories of Lawerence Lessig, professor of Law at Stanford University, who posits that code determines behavior on the Internet. My reserach is testing the application of his ideas onto the topic of security and privacy practices.
I have been contacting different group around the country in an effort to get input from the open source/hacker (in the original sense of the word) community. Your feedback is very important since this group represent the early ideas of the Internet - collaborative work, open source code. These ideas formed the backbone of what we enjoy online today.

The survey should take between 15-30 minutes to complete and are completely anonymous. When you have time please go to http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB2FEHT2UQ

For more information on my department and my research, you can check out my department's site at http://cct.georgetown.edu to learn more about it. I understand your concerns for privacy and security on this list. In fact, it's the point of my thesis.

You can read a publications that I co-wrote about technology and knowledge management on our student journal gNovis at http://gnovis.georgetown.edu/economics/ The article is titled, "Knowledge Management Project for Forty Plus of Greater Washington".

I had to use zoomerang to post the survey as that is the service my department uses to create and analyze surverys.

You can read about Lawerence Lessig at http://www.lessig.org/ He is best know for writing legal challenges to the RIAA lawsuits against file sharing services and challeging the U.S. Supreme Court to change the defination of copyright to better account for the digital age.

Thank you for you time and attention. Sorry for the long message. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
