Note: Back to our usual second thursday of the month
Colin Weiner and Shu Chow discuss the Network/Servers they
built using [9]FreeBSD for the [10]Sacramento SPCA
Location: [11]ExitCertified
Time: 7 - 9pm
Colin Weiner and Shu Chow formed a volunteer team that used
free and open source software to upgrade the [12]Sacramento
SPCA's computer network architecture including web, database,
and email services. They used the Apache web server, MySQL
database, and Postfix mail server, virtual private network
(VPN), remote web-based email on FreeBSD to create a
database-driven website that allows the shelter staff to
updated the web site without knowing HTML. Staff and volunteers
make real-time updates to key areas of content such as
[13]adoptable pets, [14]events, news, posting of
[15]newsletters and available [16]volunteer positions
So far, the new site has increased adoptions, increased
revenue, and the site has experienced approximately a 200%
increase in visitor traffic.
