I think the answers offered by others regarding citations are fine, but
the phrase "working on the lugod library database" suggests to me that you
may be encoding too much information into one database field.  If you are
really working on a database, having a separate table that contains
records with (book_id,author_name) tuples will let you search for all
books by a given author.  It may make sense to also have a
"citations" field in the book table, but a formal citation format will be
hard to search later.
