    Microsoft keeps tabs on program installation with the XP series by
requiring the computer to dial into their servers.  That is the easy way,
otherwise I think you call them and activate the product with the serial
number you give them.  Regardless they get a record of installation
requests.  Of course Norton's Ghost program and a second hard drive can
circumvent this nuisance.
