When upgrading my wife from M$ to Linux (SuSE 9.2) I found it
it necessary to dump her HP scanner and replace it with an Epson
Perfection 4870 Photo.  I suggest VueScan Software.

Works great - she is happy.  This is one of the very few "moving"
costs we incurred.
