You're /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] should look like:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "screen"
        Device          "device"
        Monitor         "monitor"
        DefaultDepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth           24
                Modes           "1024x768"
        EndSubSection
