Try insmod.  Modprobe is a fancy schmancy front end to insmod.  :)
You have to get the dependencies right, though.

   insmod /lib/modules/path/to/cdrom.o
   insmod /lib/modules/path/to/ide-cd.o

or

   insmod /lib/modules/path/to/ide-cd.o
   insmod /lib/modules/path/to/cdrom.o
