  Generally perl will not generate any warnings unless you ask for 
them.  With a -w or use warnings; .  the not _always_ in your face
warning mode makes it a wonderful quick and dirty scripting language...

> C:\>perl tmp.pl

  perl -w tmp.pl

and you should see a complaint.
