[vox-tech] gcc problem: C compiler cannot create executables

Yet another newbie question:
I was attempting to install MySQL on my Mandrake 7.0 system (upgrading the kernal
is next weeks project).
I've got: gcc 2.95.2 already installed. When I run the confiure script which
came with MySQL-3.23.39, I get a configuration error saying:
'C compiler cannot create executables'.
I've installed every gcc package that came with this distro except for Fortran
support (using Mandrakes version of RPM).
Any clues for the un-clued would be greatly appreciated.
