I usually use mpage. In a nutshell:

        dvips -f myfile.dvi | mpage -4 | lpr -Pmyprinter

Or equivalently:

        dvips -f myfile.dvi | mpage -4 -Pmyprinter

The -4 prints 4 pages per side of a sheet; -1, -2, and -8 work as you expect.
