[vox-announce] August 15 Linux Users' Group of Davis: Linux oncommodity network hardware

The Linux Users' Group of Davis (LUGOD), will be holding a meeting on:

  August 15, 2005
  6:30pm - 9:00pm

The meeting will be held at:

  Davis Public Library
  Blanchard meeting room
  315 East 14th St.
  Davis, California 95616

The topic will be:

  "Linux on commodity network hardware"

  presented by: Josh Parsons

Many small network routers, access points, and storage devices are
shipped with Linux-based firmware. If you are using a wireless router
manufactured by Linksys or ASUS, it is probably already running Linux!
Open source replacement firmware can turn these devices into
Linux-based server systems running all the software you can run on
    your Linux desktop.

Josh will bring along some hardware to demonstrate this, and show
how you can build a silent, paperback-sized web server for about $150.

For example, the Linksys NSLU2 is a tiny network appliance that
connects USB 2.0 hard drives directly to your Ethernet network and can
be obtained for less than $100. The device is Linux-based, and work is
being done by the Linux on the NSLU2 project to expand its
capabilities beyond what the stock firmware allows.
